The Ngare Raumati arrive the Bay of Islands and they intermarried with other hapu (sub-tribes) that lived in the area. In the 17th century the Nga Manu people gave Kororareka Peninsula from Te Wahapu to Tapeka as utu (payment for the killing of one of their chiefs). They were forced to give away their land after the killing of the Nga Manu chief, Waipahihi. The Maori society was destabilized from the end of the 18th century by the weapons and diseases introduced by Europeans. After the New Zealand war was some Maori places illegal and the population got European diseases. The Te Awa people from Dargaville, but they moved early and travelled south.

The traditions become of the rich cultural heritage and the global society. Hangi is a traditional meal and it cooked in the earth. It takes 3 hours to make it and it is still popular. It can compare with barbecue. The taste can describes with cooked food with the taste of earthen flavour. When they are going to say hello on a traditional way, they are pressing the nose to each others nose instead of a kiss. This is calling a “powhiri”. The most known tradition is war dance, and it is called “haka”. New Zealand's Rugby Team the All Blacks dance the “haka” dance before every game.
